Philsoc 2013 Away DayA repeat of last year's innovatory, low-cost event in the rural setting of Pigotts. Members of the society gave talks, some with strong economic and political content, within the subject area, stimulating lively debate on the issues raised. The relatively small number of participants readily enabled everyone to have their say. The subject was 'Freedom and its limits'. Speakers included Sir Alan Bailey, who drew on his experiences as a senior civil servant to address the political dimension, and Dr Jonathan Harlow, an economist and historian, Visiting Research Fellow at the University of the West of England, discussed the economic aspects. Peter Townsend handled the introduction, and later talked about the personal aspects, including consciousness of choice. |
